Improved Customer Engagement Discovery in the Google Apps Marketplace

We recently updated the Google Apps Marketplace with several new features to help developers better engage with their customers and improve discoverability of apps in the marketplace.

Reply to Comments & Reviews

It’s no secret that engaging your customers and responding to their feedback is critical to success. It’s now possible to engage in conversations with customers based on comments & reviews for your app in the marketplace.

Rich Application Snippets in Google Search

Google Search recently introduced rich snippets for applications several months ago with enhanced search results for applications from marketplaces like Android Market and others. Marketplace apps will soon be appearing as rich snippets with ratings and pricing details.

New Category Home Pages

Lastly, we introduced new home pages for each category in the Marketplace to feature the top installed and newest apps for that category.

We hope that you find value in these changes and wish everyone a happy new year!

In pursuit of better not best

I realize that many of you already scowl when you hear anyone talk about best practices. Instead of adding to that discussion, Id like to share a short story with you about someone who influenced me to keep looking for better and to never assume that Ive reached best.

I can still picture Mr. Loewen leaning on the desk at the front of my grade 9 class and settling in for a speech. The tone of his voice and even his posture indicated that what he was going to say was important. I think I expected a lecture on the importance of the subject, paying attention in class, working hard at the assignments, or being respectful to the teacher. Or maybe he was going to give his outstanding student joke - students who crossed the line would end up out standing in the hallway. Instead, he confessed to us. He confessed that he didnt know it all. Of course I cant remember the exact words, but it went something like this:
"In this course Im going to teach you what I know to the best of my ability. Im going to tell you truths as I understand them today. But, someday you will encounter ideas and truths that might make more sense than what I have taught you in this course. You will discover that some of what I have taught you is wrong. When you encounter those ideas, embrace them. And even as you embrace those new truths, remember that you, also, might be wrong again."
Those words sat with me for a long time before I saw the wisdom in them and embraced them. They have served me well and taken me through some challenging times. Thanks Mr. Loewen.

How to Make Easy Page Borders in Microsoft Word!

This weeks technology tutorial is something that is easy but SO awesome!  I have to give a big shout out to my friend Katie for showing my this one!  Shes one of my lovely co-workers and has the most amazing ideas!  And she absolutely needs to start a blog!  (Hint, hint!!!)  :)

This tutorial was by far the most popular on the poll this week!

Before I start the tutorial, I just want to take a quick moment to think about all the lives that were lost eleven years ago today.  Being from NY (north of the city), the attack really hit close to home.  Two weekends ago I went down to the city and saw some of the new towers that theyre building.  Theyre absolutely amazing, but its unfortunate to think of the events that led us to the new construction.

Im sure you already have already, but just take a moment to think about the lives that were lost.

Now, heres the tutorial for the week...

You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture!
Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer!

For next weeks poll, Im going to add how to use both portrait and landscape lines in PowerPoint.  Be sure to vote!

TWIT Outshines Twitter In 2013!

WHAT
It is Friday night, and after a long week of work and thinking (about the future), I am going to have some fun using my imagination to predict the future evolution of the blog (in a light sense). While the blog might have been the ultimate online personal publishing tool a few years back, I suppose the flavor of 2009 is micro-blogging with Twitter in the lead, sweeping through every corner of the world. 10 million+ users now and growing fast. Expect it to reach 50 million+ users by year end.

While you require time and effort to maintain a blog (many never reach the second post), you cant say that of micro-blogging. So, why are micro-blogging tools such as Twitter growing in popularity around the world so fast?

WHY TWITTER?
"Simplicity has played an important role in Twitters success. People are eager to connect with other people and Twitter makes that simple. Twitter asks one question, "What are you doing?" Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web (answered by Twitter)..."

Easy to register, easy to learn, easy to connect, easy to write, easy to converse, easy to share, easy to socialize, easy to follow, easy to promote (yourself and your company), easy to message, easy, easy, etc. Seriously, you can have so much fun with so little effort. How do you beat that?

TWIT MANIA IN 2013!
So, what comes after Twitter or micro-blogging? Molecular blogging? While 140 characters might sound simple, short, easy, and cool today, I predict that we might see tools breaking the barrier further, so here is my solution or idea. Lets just call it TWIT. Not twit (meaning wise!) :)

As time passes by, Twitter will loose its trendy edge and people will explore other simpler and easier tools, and eventually Twitter will be seen as a long-winded way to express oneself compared to the new revolution in town. what?

Yes, we are talking about TWIT and the year is 2013. People are still fond of blogging and Twitter, but TWIT has taken the world by storm. People are fed up of knowing what others are doing (who cares what you eat for breakfast?), and who has the time to write a sentence or 140 characters.

With TWIT you must say what you want within 3 words or 33 characters (Just Do It). TWIT asks one question, "What do you think?" And you better be concise and short, or the world wont be following and watching/reading/listening what you have to say. It is really up to you whether you want to post your answer using video, audio, graphics, or text (the tool can detect the words in all modes). Whatever mode you use, you are limited to 33 characters (or 3 words). Its easy, challenging and fun at the same time.

People simply love it, and by November 2013, TWIT users has smashed the billion mark. Whether you are on your IPhone Flex or old PC, TWIT users are TWITing an average of 20.5 messages a day. You want to buy a ZaidPhone, and within one search you have 1 million TWIT reflections of what people think about it. And by that time, TWIT uses an intelligent synonym analyzer and a semantic babble doodle to make humanly sense of all these short reflections via a patterned 3D visualization synthesizer (what the h......l is that!).

So, what do people love about TWIT?
People want to know what others think about this and that, and they love quick trigger answers (Much like headers or slogans). With TWIT you can find out within seconds what millions think about anything you can imagine summarized with a few words. It is amazing!

While Twitter users have thousands of followers, popular TWIT users have often millions of followers . Obama was asked, what is your secret weapon to win the 2013 election? And his answer was "TWIT of course!"

TIME TO SLEEP!

It is getting late, and I am getting sleepy (Nearly 3 am for crying out loud!), and this post needs a break. I need some more time to conceptualize a TWIT that inspires millions. Ops, then comes Rubi on hot wheels. Are the any savvy programmers who are working on a molecular blogging tool right now? Seriously, 140 characters is simply too long to be spicy in 2013. So, will TWIT outshine Twitter in 2013? Time to get back to reality, I mean sleep :)

A first experiment on D3 bar chart in pentaho CDE Queried output on Bar Chart with few limitations

Hi Guys,

I love experimenting/Playing with Pentaho C-Tools where it took me to explore D3 bar chart with SQL query result set...

Not a big deal in implementing it, but want to share some thing with community folks.

What will you learn in this post ?
You will get an idea on how to implement D3 bar chart.
1) Passing query output to D3 chart code.

Limitations on the Example :
1) Query and Chart is not parametrized yet.
2) Y-Axis labels are not dynamic yet.
3) Tool tip is not implemented.
4) Not tested the bootstrap support.
5)  and more.....

Readers are encouraged add your support to improve the sample of this in comment box...

Software setup :
a) C-Tools(CDE,CDF,CDA,CGG) - Version14.06.18 stable with bootstrap support.
b) Database server for a sample query - In this example postgres - foodmart database.
3) Install D3 components plug-in from market Place

 Example 1 :

 Step 1 : Layout : Create your layout .... Row---column--Html... Span 24 for this example
 Step 2 : Data Source :
Driver : org.postgresql.Driver
URL : jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5432/foodmart
UserName/Password : postgres/postgres
Query : query1
select distinct first_name as letter,salary as frequency from employee where salary!=20 limit 20
Step 3: Components
D3 Components - D3 component -
In properties for Custom Chart Script write below code.
Datasoruce : query1

function f(dataset){

    var data = this.cdaResultToD3Array(dataset);

    var margin = {top: 20, right: 20, bottom: 30, left: 40},
        width = this.getWidth() - margin.left - margin.right,
        height = this.getHeight() - margin.top - margin.bottom;

    var formatPercent = d3.format(".0%");

    var x = d3.scale.ordinal()
        .rangeRoundBands([0, width], .1, 1);

    var y = d3.scale.linear()
        .range([height, 0]);

    var xAxis = d3.svg.axis()
        .scale(x)
        .orient("bottom");

    var yAxis = d3.svg.axis()
        .scale(y)
        .orient("left")
        .tickFormat(formatPercent);

    var svg = d3.select("#"+this.htmlObject).append("svg")
        .attr("width", width + margin.left + margin.right)
        .attr("height", height + margin.top + margin.bottom)
      .append("g")
        .attr("transform", "translate(" + margin.left + "," + margin.top + ")");

    // Commenting this out, we have data already
    // d3.tsv("/pentaho/api/repos/d3ComponentLibrary/static/custom/data/data.tsv", function(error, data) {

      data.forEach(
                    function(d) {
                    d.frequency = +d.frequency;
                    }
      );

      x.domain(data.map(function(d) { return d.letter; }));
      y.domain([0, d3.max(data, function(d) { return d.frequency; })]);

      svg.append("g")
          .attr("class", "x axis")
          .attr("transform", "translate(0," + height + ")")
          .call(xAxis);

      svg.append("g")
          .attr("class", "y axis")
          .call(yAxis)
        .append("text")
          .attr("transform", "rotate(-90)")
          .attr("y", 6)
          .attr("dy", ".71em")
          .style("text-anchor", "end")
          .text("Frequency");

      svg.selectAll(".bar")
          .data(data)
        .enter().append("rect")
          .attr("class", "bar")
          .attr("x", function(d) { return x(d.letter); })
          .attr("width", x.rangeBand())
          .attr("y", function(d) { return y(d.frequency); })
          .attr("height", function(d) { return height - y(d.frequency); });

      d3.select("input").on("change", change);

      var sortTimeout = setTimeout(function() {
        d3.select("input").property("checked", true).each(change);
      }, 2000);

      function change() {
        clearTimeout(sortTimeout);

        // Copy-on-write since tweens are evaluated after a delay.
        var x0 = x.domain(data.sort(this.checked
            ? function(a, b) { return b.frequency - a.frequency; }
            : function(a, b) { return d3.ascending(a.letter, b.letter); })
            .map(function(d) { return d.letter; }))
            .copy();

        var transition = svg.transition().duration(750),
            delay = function(d, i) { return i * 50; };

        transition.selectAll(".bar")
            .delay(delay)
            .attr("x", function(d) { return x0(d.letter); }

            );

        transition.select(".x.axis")
            .call(xAxis)
          .selectAll("g")
            .delay(delay);
      }
    // });

}

NOTE :
1)  As the code is a replica of build in Example in Pentaho D3 plug-in , the code depends on 2 column result set of data.....

Step 4: Save dashboard and test the output
Image 1 : With sort enabled - For this you need to write below HTML code for the column of this chart in layout section .

<label><input type="checkbox"> Sort values</label>

Image 2 : With sort check box disable

Example 2:

Why to wait ? Lets have a look at this static bar chart example in CDE( check this : http://jsfiddle.net/enigmarm/3HL4a/13/ )

Image 1:  Ascending

Image 2 : Descending
Default:

To get the above static charts on CDE output... lets do this..

Hmmmm...!!! the same  code I used from http://jsfiddle.net/enigmarm/3HL4a/13/ in CDE as an experiment..

Add HTML code at Row-Column-HTML
Add Css code at : Code Sinppet Css
Add D3 chart script code at : Custom chart script for D3 component.
Save your dashboard and preview it..

Are you eager to check it in CDE ? Download the examples here

Reading data from single data source Single SQL Query for two charts in pentaho CDE

Hi guys...!!!

Community Dashboard Editor is the best reporting/dash boarding  tool that I have worked. Its smart functionality made me love to work with it and exploring the things time by time.

Youll learn how to fetch different columns from result set of a single query and use them in different analysis purpose in charting.

Recently I needed to work with a single query data source(SQL) of having 3 columns result set ...
Lets say there are 3 columns A,B and C where as A column is having some category names and B and C are having some columns.

A  B   C
--------------
abc 2   4
pqr  6   8
xyz 10 5
and etc.

From the result set A&B are on first chart and A&C are on other chart..
Now how ?????? This question leads me to check the "Data sources" section of CDE.

Follow the steps below.

1) Click on the "sqloverjndi" which  you created for your SQL query.
2)  In the properties section you can find an option called "Output options". Just click on  it.
3) Lets say you have 3 columns in your result set and these 3 columns takes index values starting from 0 to n.. i.e., A column index is 0 , B column index is 1 and for the C  value 2 is the index.

  NOTE: if you have more numbers of columns you can give as many indexes by clicking "Add" button as many times.
4)For Chart 1:
  i) Click on the chart component where you want show A& B columns ( A is category B is value)
  ii) In the properties(Click on Advanced properties) click on "Pre Execution"
  iii) Write this below code
            function f() {
                                 this.chartDefinition.readers = [
                                 {names:category, indexes: 0},
                                  {names: value, indexes: 1},
                                    {indexs: 2}
                                    ];
             }

  Why this {indexs:2} ? if you omit this the values of index2 append to the category names... to eliminate that problem you need to write it.

 5) For Chart2 :
 Repeat the steps in in point 4)
 Slight changes in code ...

function f() {
                                 this.chartDefinition.readers = [
                                 {names:category, indexes: 0},
                                  {names: value, indexes: 1},
                                    {indexs: 2}
                                    ];
             }

You are done with reading data from single query of 3 columns where 1&2 for one chart and 1&3 for another chart...

Save your dashboard and see the preview.

Improvements Expected in Google Nexus 6 after Reviewing Nexus 5

Improvements Expected in Google Nexus 6 after Reviewing Nexus 5

Nexus 5 is the flagship phone of Google that was released this October and created a quite a buzz in the tech world with its irresistibly advanced specifications. However, since the inception of civilization the Darwinian philosophy of ‘survival of the fittest’ has ruled the thoughts of the human beings and it continues to do so even today. Human beings always want to improvise and modify everything surrounding them so that they can lead a better life. This basic human drive has also led the tech geeks to consider the improvisation that they expect to see in Nexus 6 within a month of the release of Nexus 5.

Advanced processor with greater RAM support, bigger storage capacity, enhanced screen resolution and better camera are some of the standard facets which are improved with the launch of the next generation phones. However, there are also some other very basic aspects on which the developers must pay attention to. Here are some of those basic aspects where we expect improvements when Google Nexus 6 will be released.

Battery
The batteries of smartphones drain out rapidly, especially if the users are avid apps users. So just in case we miss charging our phone for a day, we are going to face the music the next day. This is true for all smartphones, and though some improvements have been made in this genre but we are yet to see a smartphone with 3 – 4 days of battery backup. Therefore, Nexus 6 can give a feat to all other smartphones by developing a battery that suits with the diverse use of the phone.

Water-resistant
Approximately half or at least one fourth of the smartphone users have lost their beloved phones due to liquid damage. Google Nexus 6 can come up with a technology whereby its next flagship gadget will be 100% resistant to water and thereby providing the potential customers with more than enough reasons to invest on this smartphone.

Dust- resistant
Since the smartphones are very fragile, inclusion of technology that resist dust from damaging the smartphone is also a necessity. It will safeguard the phone from climatic damages like moisture and dust.

Solar Charging Unit
The developers can provide Google Nexus 6 with a battery that can be charged using solar energy along with the mainstream method charging it. This will be a great backup option in case of urgent need.

These are some of the areas where we expect some improvisations when the next flagship phone of Google will be launched in the upcoming year.

Remove password pattern lock gmail account in your Samsung Galaxy Core i8260 i8262

Alright another tutorial for  Samsung, and this one is for Samsung Galaxy Core (i8262). Sometimes this tutorial does not work because the Android System Recovery is not installed in the system. Its either disabled by the manufacturer or the Carrier.

Hard resetting / factory resetting your phone will solve the following issues:
1. If you forgot your pattern lock
2. If you forgot your gmail account
3. If you forgot your password
4. Apps that automatically force closing
5. Stuck in Samsung Logo (sometimes does not work if the firmware is totally damage)

NOTE: Performing hard reset will erase your data.

To hard reset:

1. Turn off your phone
2. Press and Hold Volume UP + Home Button + Power Button simultaneously
3. Release the buttons when you see the Samsung Galaxy Logo Core logo
4. Android System Recovery should appear
5. Select wipe / factory reset, to navigate press the Volume Rocker, to select press the HOME Button
6. Reboot your phone.

Note: If performing hard reset did not succeed, you need to wipe the cache first in the android system recovery before performing wipe / factory reset.

I hope this tutorial helps you.
